Toward the middle of my Junior season, I fractured my hip socket, and tore my labrum, and played the rest of the season and playoffs. I knew I wouldn't be able to make it through another off season of training and full game schedule if I did nothing about it. So my family and I sought out the best hip surgeon we could find. Through our research with elite runners and athletes, we found Dr. Tom Ellis. Unfortunately, the surgery that I required was going to take 6-8 months of recovery time, which meant that I might miss my senior season. Despite it being a two and a half hour drive to get to the office of Dr. Ellis, I knew I was seeing the best, and boy were the long drives worth it. Dr. Ellis and his team communicated with my parents and I about every step of the process. I know he had other patients, but I felt like I was the only one. They were able to work around my schedule as a busy Junior/Senior and we did virtual sessions to accommodate the two and a half hour distance. I did exactly what Dave Kholrieser told me to do and despite some twists and turns in my recovery; I was back on the field by game three. We are in the middle of a playoff run and I have committed to play college football at Denison University. Without Dr. Tom Ellis and Dave's help, I don't know where I'd be today.

I had hip and back pain for 15-plus years. I knew I needed to do something about it when golf took longer to play each time. Sometimes I'd quit after 9 holes or not play at all. Finally, after playing several rounds of golf in a few short days and losing to my son in July 2022, I reached out to Dr. Ellis and decided to get the Medacta total hip replacement.
I had surgery in September 2022. I took pain medication the first day, then ibuprofen for a couple of weeks. Zero pain and I mean zero!
Full driver swing exactly four months after surgery, but I feel I could've done it much sooner. I played three rounds at Pinehurst at the end of March 2023 and beat my son in 2 out of 3 matches from the same tees. Now at the end of June, I'm ready for 18-36 holes a day for the next two weeks!
My back pain is gone too. It feels amazing to get out of my truck and walk into the office without pain. I've gone from a hurting 63-year-old man to a pain-free 64-year young man.
I may be the exception or the rule, I don't know, but I like it!
Thanks, doc!
